In the summer after her sophomore year at College of the Atlantic, Arch alumna Betzi was selected to work on a research project involving Zika and other viruses, studying the mosquitos that transmit the diseases.

Subject: just locked in a job for this summer...

So, the Maine Medical Center Research Institute asked the college for help with their arthropod-borne virus surveillance program, and i had the honor of being the first person referred! Now I've got a full-time job for the summer that's right up my alley; field work collecting insects, primarily vectors (for example, the institute is monitoring Aedes albopictus mosquito populations in correspondence with the Zika virus, and Culiseta melanura for its transmission of the eastern equine encephalitis virus), and I am so excited. Really feeling prepared in this opportunity to be a Productive Member of a Global Society!
Thanks Cheryl, and Arch as a whole, for teaching me to push through despite the rough patches. You've all been with me on this journey called recovery, and today wouldn't be anywhere near the same without you.
